Preparation Is Key

How many times have you run out the door, scrambled into your car or other transport, got to work and noticed you were missing the one essential item you required that day?Let’s hope it takes just one hand to count, but the message is clear: take time to prepare, and you may avoid the pitfalls of forgetting something that you need. The challenge many people and organizations face in communication is that they don’t (or can’t) adequately prepare enough for potential problems. No matter what you think you’ll face in the preparation, the failure to prepare will be a cost, financial, hours of work, and/or social capital.

Preparation doesn’t mean that we can control everything. The laws of physics, gravity, motion, etc. are pretty solid. Considering some external factors as constants, we can scan our data to make plans, and build in supported assessments to address unknowns. The laws of probability can be on your side, but it never hurts to pack extra planning should you venture into new territory.

Out of all the challenges people and organizations can face, preparation has two benefits: 1. Avoiding a potential future crisis and 2. Understanding yourself, your organization, and your environment. Understanding is the first step to creating impact and change both within and beyond your circles. Take a breath knowing you are prepared for the road ahead, but reflect that you understand where you want to go.
